Nov. 5th, 2008 03:09 pmEven though Prop 8 is going to pass, I am still...happy. Beyond happy.
Because this morning, I walked into the weekly GSA meeting, and I said, "Proposition 8 is going to pass. And that sucks. But last night, this country elected Barack Obama. We can change. And we need to do something, to make that change."
And the president of the club said, "I've been wanting to talk about that. We need to do something." And so the twelve of us spent half an hour coming up with a game plan for school outreach, for school issues we're going to make a stand on and how we're going to make that stand, for raising awareness. Everyone has a role. Everyone is participating.
Later on, my friend said that she's still on a high. She feels like she can do anything. And I agree. I told her we have to hold onto that. Maybe it's just being seventeen and naive, but...we can change things. Give us a decade or so, and we will change things. All we have to do is hold onto a fraction of the energy that we had for Obama.
We can do this.

Date: 2008-11-05 10:45 pm (UTC)We made a start on it. That was the beginning of the modern feminist movement, environmental awareness and a whole lot of things.
Then things happened, like Nixon and Reagan and the two Bush presidencies. People didn't stop caring, but it was harder to accomplish anything with the kind of opposition that was so strong the last eight years. It went from large community action, to smaller individual deeds.
You can do this. Keep working and keep believing.

Date: 2008-11-06 03:18 am (UTC)I love what this is doing for our generation. I feel like everyone is actually proud, excited and hopeful for the future, not scared and dreading. In my school today kids started cheering "yes we can" in the hallways, it was magical.
I saw the sun rise this morning over the city on my bus, (which is a thing that happens every day,) but it was so beautiful I got goose bumps. There were these rays of light coming through the fog and when we passed over the bridge there wasnt a cloud in the sky and all the fog was behind us. I don't know, I'm probably the most corny person in the world for saying this, but it seemed like a sign.
My psychology teacher told me that the stars were lining up for America because Barack Obama got elected and holiday mugs came out at Starbucks.
