I saw Hairspray today.

Hairspray is one of those stories that always just kind of makes me bouncy and warm, and I'm happy to say the new movie didn't disappoint. They only left out two and a half songs, and they didn't screw up the storyline too badly. Plus I saw it with a friend, and I got to freak out/amuse her by singing the songs under my breath. It was fun.

On the other hand, I just spent eleven dollars on a 100-page book for summer reading. I really need to get a library membership.

Hairspray is truly an awesome movie musical. I'd love to see it on stage though, I bet it's even better. (And would like to see the original movie, which wasn't a musical.) And seeing it as someone who really does live near Baltimore was amusing. (Though I can tell you they pronounced Baltimore wrong - the true Baltimorean says it: "Buldimore." So it should've been "Good mornin' Buldimore!")

Movie was great. Musical was better. (But only just.)

Hairspray! I loved it! I kind of missed "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now," and having a Penny with a strong voice, but those are minor quibbles when compared to the general awesomeness of the movie. I was only brave enough to mouth words to the songs, so even singing them under your breath earns major points from me.

Hee. The Penny in the musical has an incredible voice. When she sings. It's really surprising, the first time you hear.

I was so sad that "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now" wasn't in it. It's my favorite Hairspray song, hands down.

The Penny in the musical DOES have an incredible singing voice. I have some of the songs off the Original Broadway Cast soundtrack, and I always love her parts. I didn't really expect Amanda Bynes to have a strong voice though, so I wasn't surprised when she didn't. I did sort of miss having Broadway Penny sing those parts, because it's just not the same. Which is why they gave one of her lines to Seaweed.

Mama I'm a Big Girl Now is definitely one of my top favorite Hairspray songs, and I kept waiting for it, thinking maybe they'd slide it in late . . . but no dice. I actually hummed it to myself when I left the theater. I wonder if they filmed it but cut it for time, or just didn't bother? I also missed Tracy's verse in Without Love.

But those things aside, I thought the movie really captured the energy and emotion very well, and I was pretty pleased with it.

Love your icon, by the way.

"We'll call the NAACP!"

"Life's like making out with Perry Como!"

*cough* Maybe I know too much about this musical.

"Mama I'm a Big Girl Now" is on the movie soundtrack, so I think that they filmed it and cut it for time.

And thanks! [livejournal.com profile] slash_girl made it.

"Life is like my Dad without his Bromo!"

"COME ON YOU VON TUSSLES GO AND SHAKE YOUR FANNY MUSCLES!"

*Cough* Maybe I ALSO know too much about this musical . . . especially for somebody who hasn't even seen it. I'm one of those Broadway losers who watches clips of shows on Youtube and listens to the soundtracks without actually seeing them. The touring company was in California while I was there, but when I suggested seeing it, my dad stared at me like I belonged in an asylum. So no dice there.

Well, if it's on the soundtrack, it'll probably be on the deleted scenes section of the DVD when it comes out. Rent was the same way.

"No we can't! Yes you can! No we can't! Yes you can! YES WE CAN!!!"

And, a personal favorite: "When I was a girl I used to dress up Ken, but now that I'm a woman I want bigger men. I don't need a Barbie doll to show me how..."

I saw it when it came through here...last year? Year before? It was amazing.

Lucky! It hasn't come through here yet. We've had Wicked and Rent (I only saw the former, but it was amazing), but never Hairspray.

I love Amber's lines in that song XD. "Once upon a time I used to play with toys, but now I'd rather play around with teenage boys! So if I get hickey please don't . . . have a cow!"

Actually, the whole song's just brilliant. "Mom I gotta tell you that, without a doubt, I get my best dancing lessons from you-ou. You're the one who taught me how to twist and shout, BECAUSE YOU SHOUT NONSTOP AND YOU'RE SO . . . TWISTED TOO!" I missed it. I listened to it in my ipod on the car when I finished the movie. . . and then I hummed "BLOOD ON THE PAVEMENT, what a mess! Is that your eyeball on my dress?" Hooray for bonus tracks.

"Kids listen up, 'cause I'm her mom, yes, blood on the pavement will ruin! Your! Prom!"

And as you can probably see from the title of the post, I love the Good Morning Baltimore reprise, which also wasn't in the movie.

"Hands on the wheel, though I know it's a drag; I'd hate to see that body in a body bag!"

Well, I'll have to hope that they put some of the missing songs on the DVD when it comes out. That would make my day.

"Forget about your algebra and calculus, 'cause you can always do your homework on the morning bus!"

Yes, I know, wrong song, but I love it.

Ooh, yes, I hope they do. They won't have "The Big Doll House" because they changed that part of the story, but hopefully they'll have the others.

I love it too! Actually, I think I just love all the songs, or nearly all. Such a good sountrack!

Fun story. My mom had no idea what the show was about, so she gasped aloud when started they singing about how nice and white they were XD. Not knowing that a major thing about the show is that they're protesting segregation, she wasn't sure if it was just disturbingly racist or something. I kind of cracked up. Knowing in advance what the show's about, I hadn't thought about how it might seem to somebody who DOESN'T.

Yeah, there's always a few that get cut due to story reasons. But the movie soundtrack should be a good clue. They tend to have all of the songs on the CD included in the deleted scenes. Any that aren't on the CD, though, weren't recorded and therefore don't exist to be put on the DVD. Which is sad.
