It's official! I've moved in to college. I've got a week of orientation activities, and then classes start on the 25th.

My roommate is from California, and I ate dinner with her family tonight -- I got to choose the restaurant, because of course they didn't know any, and it was all very fun. Unfortunately, all of the orientation activities look a little bit...boring? Well, to give you an idea, we have a two hour lecture on drugs, and another one on "being part of the campus community." But I guess I'll just use the opportunity to meet people.

They gave us paper wristbands, and they expect us to keep them all week. I guess they like their freshmen unshowered. *g*

During the lectures, look around and see who else is bored. Unintentional bonding activity FTW!

I've already made plans to pass notes in the back row of the drug lecture. *g*

They wristbanded the freshman? That, I think, is distinctly odd, though, I skipped all of my freshman bonding activities.

It's so that we don't have to pay for food during orientation. Alas, if we lose or break the wristband (which, to be fair, is stronger than most paper, but still not on the level of, say, plastic), we have to pay $10 to replace it. At least now I know why entrance to amusement parks is so expensive... XD

Aaw, Freshman Orientation! That makes me so nostalgic. I'm just entering my Senior year now, and it seems both a lifetime ago and just yesterday that I was shuffling between orientation activities. Of course, yours sound a little more dull than mine were, though even the "social mixers" were more people standing around awkwardly in an overcrowded room and clinging to the few people they knew. You meet people that first week that you assume will be part of your social circle all year, and then you end up rarely seeing half of them and forgetting who they were in a few months. From my experience, that first week or two is filled with this odd sense of community, daring, and excitement that exists alongside a vague sense of overwhelmed panic and intense awkwardness. There's really nothing like it, but after a month or so, everything settles down.

I hope you enjoy both your first week and college in general. While the whole "These are the best years of your life!" thing might be a bit of an exaggeration and generalization (or at least I hope it is), it's certainly an interesting time : )

Thanks for the well-wishes! I definitely plan to make the most of my last week without classes...

I saw your sister. She gave an introduction to the guy who gave an introduction to the President's speech.

What's Carlow's orientation like?

Good luck.

Skip at least half the orientation lectures. Admittedly college here is different to college there... but my Freshers' Week I nearly died of boredom, and that was with interesting club and society things to go to in between the official "Welcome to the University" crap. But, you know. Differences. They exist. :)

I plan on going to the fun exploration-and-outing things and skipping the lectures. Apparently the drug lecture has skits, though (it's a drug-and-sex lecture, guess which part the skits are about) so I might find time for that.

Go you! I was in band, so never got the whole freshman orientation thing. I was too busy hurling flags on the parade grounds. :-D
